"Last year I was commissioned by the Castleford
Schools Pyramid of Arts (CasPA), to write a musical
celebration of Castleford to coincide with the
Castleford Heritage Festival. The result was 13 songs
tracing the history of Castleford to the present day,
starting with 'Legiolium', the old Roman name for
Castleford, a song about how the Romans came and made
an impact on the town. Other songs tell stories about
different eras in Castlefords history such as 'The
Potteries', a time when the industry thrived in
Castleford, 'When Coal was King in Castleford' tracing
the rise and fall of the coal industry, 'The Aire and
the Calder' reminding us how important the water was
as a form of transport. Other songs include
'Castleford Rugby' in which I take about 70 famous
players who have donned the famous black and amber
over the years, and weave them into a Gilbert and
Sullivan type patter song using Offenbachs 'Can Can'
from 'Orpheus in the Underworld'!!

There is also mention of the famous characters and
places connected with Castleford from George Formby,
who met his wife there, to Henry Moore, who is without
doubt the worlds most renowned sculptor.

The result is 200 children from Castleford schools
singing about their own town with pride and, I hope,
with an eye to the future as in the song 'Xscape' we
see a full turnaround as the old Glasshoughton
colliery site is transformed into a futuristic
pleasure centre!

This CD should appeal to anyone who either comes from
Castleford, or who has an interest in heritage, and
what it means to ordinary people.

As I say in one of the songs 'It's the folk and not
the money that is Cas's wealth'
The CD is available from Thursday 22nd June 2006
